Assessment of Bees’ Diversity within Ngel-Nyaki Forest Reserve at Taraba State, Nigeria

A field survey was conducted in Ngel-Nyaki Forest Reserve to assess the diversity of bees within Reserve. Two methods sampling techniques were used sample bee species, opportunistic and systematic sweep netting. Opportunistic method applied by netting along 100 m plot where flowering plants blooming. Collection a single collector using an active search walking randomly around observing searching for foraging on flowers then net capturing bees. Sweep conducted, line transect established plots two hours, from 6:00am 11:00am spending 20 minutes each considering when weather is conducive bees’ activity. This done entomological net. Bees captured killed killing bottle containing 70% ethanol. Specimens pinned board unique codes assigned species before identification. identified level published keys, guide use online materials. All data computed Microsoft® Excel® 2016 percentage abundance composition calculated.575 spreading across 3 families 12 sampled. The most abundant honey (Apismellifera) (245; 42.53%),followed memic (Megachile sp.)(89;15.45%),and least leafcutter bee(Osmiasp.) (2;0.35%). In terms Shannon Diversity Index (H) Equitability (EH) 1.694893 0.736083respectively while 1.750688 0.977078 respectively. study therefore, brings fore underline need sustainable actions be taken conserve beneficial rare managing ones.
